Visual Interactions in Power BI
Selecting Data and Clearing Selections
Selecting data
In Power BI, you can easily adjust your selections using your mouse and keyboard, particularly the CTRL or SHIFT keys. This allows you to select multiple data points, even non-contiguous ones, in various visualizations.
Clearing selections
To clear your selections, you can click on a blank area of a chart or canvas, or if you have one data point selected, click on that point again to deselect it.
Cross Filtering and Highlighting
Power BI allows you to analyze your data with interactive visual analysis through cross-highlighting and cross-filtering. When you select a data point in one visual, related data points are highlighted or filtered in other visuals on the same page, helping you make connections between them.
* Note: Cross-filtering and cross-highlighting are not automatic; they are functionalities set up by the report developer
Sorting data
Sorting data in visuals
To sort data in any visual, select the "More Options" ellipsis, and pick "Sort By" at the bottom of the menu.
Sorting data in tables
To sort tables and matrices, you can click any column header to sort by that field and toggle between ascending and descending order
Navigating data hierarchies
Which visuals have hierarchies?
Some Power BI visuals may have hierarchies that you can navigate, such as moving up or down through levels of geography or through units of time. To identify if a visual has a hierarchy, hover over or click the visualization and check the header icons for a series of arrow icons that let you drill through and navigate the data.
Navigating data hierarchies
You can drill up or down the hierarchy, focus on a single category at a time, or expand the next level down in the hierarchy using the available icons. Remember, some options may be grayed out depending on where you are in the specific hierarchy.
To reset your view, you can drill up until the button grays out, or reset the entire report using the icon on the action bar at the top of the report. Navigating hierarchies in Power BI is a powerful way to analyze your data and gain deeper insights.
